Project Description

The Independence Boulevard Bridge over Brandywine Creek (Big Creek) in Parma Heights, Ohio will be replaced. A bridge type study was performed to determine the most economical replacement structure while also considering constructability, environmental, utility, and right of way impacts. A 62’ long simple span prestressed concrete box beam superstructure with a composite reinforced concrete deck and semi-integral abutments founded on drilled shafts was selected as the replacement structure. New abutments were installed behind the footprint of the existing abutments which allowed the contractor to use the existing abutments as cofferdams, work above the OHWM, and avoid the need for a waterway permit. The existing abutments will be used as permanent scour protection for final conditions. The existing roadway width will be maintained, and the sidewalk widths increased to better facilitate pedestrian traffic to the adjacent Valley Forge High School. Euthenics worked with the City to secure a funding grant through ODOT’s Municipal Bridge Program. This grant provides funding for 95% of the construction and construction engineering cost.
